From Logo to Finished Sign: Creating Our Own Custom Acrylic Business Sign

Sometimes, the best way to demonstrate what you can create for other businesses is to make something for your own.

We recently designed and produced a custom acrylic sign featuring the SurCutEngraving logo.

The aim was not simply to put our name on a board.

We wanted to create a sign that reflected our brand while demonstrating how different acrylic colours, finishes and layers can be combined to produce something more distinctive than a standard printed sign.

From Digital Logo to Laser-Ready Design

Every custom sign starts with an idea, logo or piece of artwork. Before anything can be cut, the original design needs to be prepared for production.

Our SurCutEngraving logo contains several different elements, colours and shapes. To turn the original artwork into a physical sign, the design was separated into individual components and prepared as a laser-ready file.

This stage is an important part of the process. The size and position of each element need to be considered alongside the materials, number of layers and final assembly.

What works as a digital logo on a screen does not always translate directly into a physical product. Adjustments may be needed to make sure individual elements can be accurately cut, positioned and assembled while maintaining the appearance of the original design.

Combining Different Acrylic Colours and Finishes

One of the main features of this project was the combination of contrasting materials.

The sign uses a matte grey acrylic backing panel, providing a clean and neutral base for the raised logo elements. Gloss white and orange acrylic create contrast against the matte background, while mirrored gold details add depth, reflections and a more premium finish.

The combination of matte, gloss and mirrored surfaces changes the appearance of the sign depending on the viewing angle and lighting.

Rather than creating a completely flat design, the individual acrylic elements were layered to give the logo additional depth and dimension.

This is one of the advantages of custom-made signage: colours, materials, finishes and construction methods can be selected around the individual design rather than being restricted to a standard template.

Cutting the Individual Elements

Once the design was prepared, the individual components could be laser cut from the selected acrylic materials.

Because the sign contains multiple colours and layers, the different elements needed to be prepared and cut separately.

The process included the backing panel, lettering, logo elements, borders and decorative details.

Accuracy is particularly important when working with layered designs. Small differences in positioning can become much more noticeable once several individual pieces are assembled into one finished product.

Bringing Everything Together

After cutting, the individual elements were carefully positioned and assembled onto the backing panel.

This is the stage where the digital design finally becomes a physical product.

The raised lettering and logo elements create natural shadows and depth, while the mirrored gold acrylic catches and reflects the surrounding light. Against the matte backing panel, the gloss and mirrored materials become much more prominent.

The finished result is a sign that remains recognisable as the SurCutEngraving brand while giving the original digital logo a completely different physical presence.

More Than Just a Company Name on a Wall

Business signage can serve several purposes.

It can help create a more professional environment, reinforce brand identity and make a workspace, reception area, shop or exhibition display feel more established.

Custom acrylic signage can be suitable for:

  • offices and reception areas;

  • workshops and studios;

  • salons and treatment rooms;

  • retail environments;

  • restaurants and hospitality businesses;

  • exhibition and promotional displays;

  • interior wall branding;

  • door and room signs.

Depending on the design, signs can incorporate company logos, lettering, different acrylic colours, layered elements and a variety of finishes.

What Size Signs Can We Produce?

We typically produce complete signs up to approximately 900 × 600 mm.

However, larger overall designs may also be possible depending on their construction.

For example, signs consisting of individual letters or separate logo elements can potentially cover a larger area because the components do not require a single large backing panel.

Larger backed signs may also be possible where the design can be divided into multiple sections without negatively affecting the finished appearance.

Every project is different, so we recommend discussing larger or more complex signage requirements with us before production.

How Much Does a Custom Acrylic Sign Cost?

The cost of custom signage depends on more than its overall dimensions.

Factors that can affect the final price include:

  • size;

  • materials;

  • number of acrylic colours;

  • number of layers;

  • design complexity;

  • quantity of individual elements;

  • design and file preparation requirements;

  • production and assembly time.

As a general guide, our custom business signage starts from £65, with larger and more complex designs individually quoted according to the project requirements.

This approach allows us to recommend materials and construction methods that suit the individual design rather than applying the same solution to every project.

A Project for Our Own Business

Creating this sign allowed us to approach our own logo in the same way we would approach a customer project: considering the design, materials, construction and final appearance before moving into production.

It also demonstrates something we particularly enjoy about custom laser cutting and engraving.

A digital design does not have to remain on a screen.

With the right preparation and materials, it can become something physical, dimensional and unique to the business it represents.
